The History of Rheumatology in Edmonton and Northern Alberta:

Rheumatology started in a formal sense in Edmonton in 1968, with the appointment of Dr. John Percy as the first academic rheumatologist at the University of Alberta.  Dr. Anthony Russell joined him shortly after, followed by Dr. Paul Davis in 1975.

These three trail blazing, wise and compassionate physicians made rheumatology the success that it has become in Edmonton, at the University of Alberta, and throughout central and northern Alberta.  It is from these 3 rheumatologists that most rheumatologists in Edmonton still today give credit.

2017/18 marked 50 years of rheumatology at the University of Alberta.  To commemorate, we held the “The Joint Affair” gala on March 26, 2017, an evening of dinner and dancing to celebrate the past, and plan for the future.  Funds raised from this evening supported the establishment of the Dr. Anthony Russell Scholarship Fund.  Administered by the Arthritis Society of Alberta, this fund supports world class arthritis care, research and education in Edmonton.

In these strange new times, your rheumatology team cannot connect with you in the same way we usually do.  While we remain available by phone or virtual care, we look forward to seeing you again in person soon.  In the meantime, we wanted to find another way to connect with you, something that might bring joy and happiness in these uncertain times.  We hope you enjoy BACK TO THE RHEUM.  That is more than enough for us.  If you are able to make a contribution to the Anthony Russell Scholarship Fund, we so appreciate it.  And if you can’t, we hope this brings some healing, some medicine in its own way, as we work our way back to a new normal.
